Aromaco deodorant from Lush

If you are planning to switch to healthier beauty products, deodorant is where you should start. There is research showing that parabens (a common type of preservatives used in many deodorants and other beauty and food products) are found in large amounts in biopsy samples from breast tumours. Even if there isn’t 100% clear evidence that parabens cause cancer, that’s not the risk you want to take. I have found my perfect deodorant in a similar blog on the internet (it’s a shame that I can’t locate it anymore). It’s called Aromaco and is sold in Lush. It’s easy to buy because Lush is everywhere. It’s affordable – it’s sold for £5 per 100g at the time of writing and will last you forever (really! 100g lasts for about 6 months for me). And the best part is that it actually works. Better than many mainstream deodorants like Rexona and the like. It keeps the pits dry and smell-free for both me and my boyfriend – that must be saying something. I found the smell a bit weird at first, now I really like it though. Let’s have a look at the ingredient list:

Witch Hazel Infusion, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Stearate, Chamomile Vinegar, Sodium Bicarbonate, Patchouli OilCitral, Limonene, Perfume

The ingredients in green are all-natural. Let’s have a look at the rest.

  • Propylene Glycol has a score of 3 in EWG Skindeep which makes it low to moderate hazard. Linked to allergies, not cancer, not reproductive toxicity. It’s an alright ingredient.
  • Sodium Stearate has a score of 1 in EWG Skindeep which makes it low hazard. It’s a good ingredient.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate has a score of 0 in EWG Skindeep which makes it low hazard. It’s a good ingredient.
  • Citral has a score of 7 in EWG Skindeep which makes it moderate to high hazard. Linked to allergies, not cancer, not reproductive toxicity. It’s a dirty ingredient but not the worst kind.
  • Limonene has a score of 6 in EWG Skindeep which makes it moderate hazard. Linked to allergies, not cancer, not reproductive toxicity. It’s a dirty ingredient but not the worst kind.

There are two relatively dirty ingredients, however neither is associated with cancer or reproductive toxicity. Overall, Aromaco fairs much better than what you typically find on the supermarket shelves.
